Registering a Car in France.
A step by step guide:

  1. You need a European Certificate of Conformity for your vehicle. This you can obtain from your manufacturers head office either in the UK or France, you will have to pay for this.
  2. You will have to go to your local Hotel de Impot to obtain a Certificat de Acquisition d'un Véhicule Terrestre a Moteur, basically you complete a form in a book all the details you will find on your log book plus you will need to know approx how many km it has done. (no need to be exact).
    This form is free.
  3. If your vehicle is over 4 years old you will require a controle technique, this is the equivalent to an English MOT, and this lasts for 2 years for a car and 4x4 and for vans, motor homes up to 3.5 tonnes 1 year. The cost is approx 65€. You MUST have either beam deflectors or French headlights fitted.
  4. You can no longer register your vehicle at the préfecture. From November 1st 2017 all applications for vehicle registrations must be done online or by post. If you need any assistance please do not hesitate to ring or email. You will need:
  • English log book
  • Controle Technique (If over 4 years old)
  • Certificate of Conformity
  • Certifcat de Acquisition d'un Véhicule Terrestre a Moteur
  • Proof of residency in France. (e.g. Utility bill)
  • Passport or Photo ID (& for women, proof of Maiden Name may be required)

-Grey imports into the UK or vehicles that have never been imported to France may cause a problem but it is still possible to register them with a little work and perseverance.

-Emissions Charge.
This appears to be very much a grey area! We have been told different outcomes regarding this. Some departments we believe are charging an emissions charge on top of the registration fee where as some departments aren't.

-The Carte Grise website will help you to establish costs (you will need to know the CO2 output of your vehicle), but we recommend contacting your own prefecture for specific advice.
